A Never Changing Resolution With New Year’s Eve coming on Sunday this year, while we are still in the Christmas Season, I find myself thinking more than usual about the significance of New Year’s Eve Resolutions and the importance of our faith as we begin 2018. After all it is the season when people resolve to make long overdue changes in their lives.

Rethinking The Season of Advent You can tell we are Lutherans when we talk about the importance of the Advent Season. Many Christians don’t know what we are talking about when we tell them we are looking forward to the Advent Season as we prepare for Christmas. “What’s that,” they ask? In our prayers and worship in church, we Lutherans “stand out” in these weeks before Christmas because, for the most part, we will not celebrate Christmas until Advent is over!

Thanksgiving is a very special time among us as we remember our many blessings – so many as we sing “Count Your Blessings, Name Them One By One…” at our Thanksgiving Eve Service – that we are amazed at all the blessings God has given us. Click on the link below to download the current newsletter Luther writes, “The soul can do without everything except the Word of God, without which none of its wants (and needs) are provided for. But having the Word, it (the soul) is rich and wants for nothing, since it is the word of life, of truth, of light, of peace, of justification, of salvation, of joy, of liberty of wisdom, of virtue, of grace, of glory, and of every good thing. This Word of God in Holy Scripture, through the power of the Holy Spirit leads us to faith in Christ, frees us from all sin, makes us fearless in death, rescues us from the hand of Satan, and endows us with eternal righteousness, life, and salvation.”

The same would be true for me when I was in college and seminary. New people, old friends, new teachers, sometimes a new school to attend, dances, sports – new possibilities and a new part of my life was getting ready to begin. I was ready at the end of the summer and could hardly wait for the new school year to begin.

Some of you know that the date of our annual picnic is of some historical significance for our congregation as well as a fellowship gathering of our church family at the close of the summer season. Why is August a month of significance for us at SMLC? The first worship service of the congregation was held on August 29, 1813 in a carpenter shop. The congregation’s mission was clear back then – provide a church home to the many families making their home in a new part of the country just being settled, especially to those who came from Lutheran roots .... What a great blessing they are to our Lord’s ministry and to us. Mary Ellen Tack continues to recovery from surgery, Vicki Schiffer’s husband Ken continues to be in prayer as he has treatments for cancer, Toni Tassey our bookkeeper is held in love upon the death of her husband John this past month. Also please remember our Council President David Rodgers and Council Vice-President Ron Morrison upon recent deaths in their families. Office hours this summer while our staff and leadership gets back to health and full strength through July will continue to be 9:00 – 4:00 Tuesday through Friday. The Office will be closed on Monday.
Over the summer the Church Council and Leadership Team continue to be meeting as we work on developing a strategic plan for St. Mark’s Future and as we strive to update our St. Mark’s membership rolls. We want to grow in mission, strengthen the congregation and prepare for the future. Click on the button below to download the current newsletter What Will The Future Hold? It’s the same question being asked everywhere; what is the future of our church? As we ask that question in our own congregation, it is being asked throughout most of the congregations of our Mission District. How do we attract more young people and parents with children and interest them in church? Attendance and church ... Click on the link below to download the current newsletter ![]()

Encountering The Risen Lord “I am the Resurrection and The Life. Those who believe In Me, even though they die, They Will Live.” – John 11:25 As our ecumenical mid-week services come to a close and Holy Week Services soon begin I find myself wanting to jump ahead. I’m ready for Easter, aren’t you? Easter Joy awaits us as we walk the last steps of this year’s Lenten journey with Jesus all the way to the cross and the empty tomb of Easter. Death is not the last word over the lives of those we love nor over our lives. That’s something to celebrate. Easter hope and assurance awaits us. The Resurrection is underway.
